Southern Candied Yams (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

→ Main Ingredients

01 - 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
02 - 1/2 cup white sugar
03 - 1 teaspoon vanilla
04 - 2 teaspoons cinnamon powder
05 - Pinch of salt
06 - 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
07 - 3 pounds of peeled sweet potatoes
08 - 1 stick (1/2 cup) of butter

# Instructions:

01 - Turn your oven on to 350°F and let it heat up.
02 - Cut the sweet potatoes into slices and put them in a big pot. Pour enough water to cover them. Boil them for about 5 minutes until the edges start getting soft, but the centers stay a little firm. Drain and put them back in the pot.
03 - Melt the butter in a pan at medium heat, then add in both sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and vanilla. Stir it for around 5 minutes until the sugar dissolves.
04 - Pour the sauce over the potatoes and gently toss to coat them. Put everything in a baking dish and bake for 10 minutes. Take it out, stir gently in the syrup, then bake for another 15-20 minutes until the sauce thickens and the potatoes are done.
05 - Leave it to sit for 5 minutes before serving.

# Notes:

01 - This is a staple for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but it's also a great treat any time! Sweet potatoes are baked in a buttery, sugary syrup with warm spices until they're tender and caramelized.
02 - For a fun twist, top with marshmallows and quickly broil them, or sprinkle toasted or candied pecans on top.
03 - Store leftovers in a sealed container in the fridge for up to three days.
