They turned out way better than I thought, and now my family asks for them all the time.

Key Ingredients Breakdown

  • Crescent roll dough sheets: make that crispy, golden outer layer
  • Provolone cheese: adds creamy, genuine Italian flavor with great melt
  • Top-notch Italian meats: with pepperoni, ham, and genoa salami for real flavor
  • Roasted red peppers: bring sweetness with smoky undertones
  • Pepperoncini: give that zippy tang we all want
  • Fresh pesto: creates a fragrant, tasty upper crust
  • Parmesan cheese: adds rich depth and beautiful browning

Making Your Tasty Squares

Getting The Base Right:
Start with dough that's not cold from the fridge for easier stretching. Push it down carefully into your pan, making sure it covers evenly up the sides. Take your time to build a good foundation without holes or skinny patches. This bottom part needs to hold everything without breaking. Work the dough slowly but firmly into each corner so it all stays in place.
Stacking Your Flavors:
Lay down lots of provolone cheese right on top of the dough first. This stops moisture from making your bottom soggy. Put your meats down in order, first pepperoni, then ham, with salami last. Make sure each meat slightly covers the next so you get all flavors in every bite. Spread out your roasted peppers and pepperoncini evenly so the taste is the same throughout.
Closing It Up Right:
The top dough needs special care. Pull it slowly to cover everything, then pinch and close the edges really well. This keeps all your fillings inside while baking and makes that perfect pocket of goodness.

My first try making these squares taught me a lot about not rushing and layering things right. Now they're what I'm known for at get-togethers, and my friends always want me to bring them.

Ways To Serve

Dish these squares up alongside extra pepperoncini and some pesto for dipping. They go great with a fresh Italian salad. When friends come over, put out some marinara sauce too for folks who want more flavor.

Fun Twists To Try

Switch up this basic idea by mixing different Italian meats. Throw in some fresh spinach for a healthier option. Make them hotter with spicy capicola or calabrese salami.

Keeping Them Fresh

Store any squares you don't eat in a sealed container in your fridge. Don't use the microwave to warm them up - the oven keeps them crispy. Just heat at 350°F for about 10 minutes for the best taste.

After making tons of these squares, I've found they're much more than just food. They help bring everyone together, making happy moments around the table. Whether you're hosting a party or packing lunch, these Italian Sub Squares always get compliments.

01 2 packages of crescent roll dough sheets

→ Meats & Cheese

02 ¼ pound thinly sliced Genoa salami
03 ¼ pound deli-sliced ham
04 ¼ pound of pepperoni from the deli
05 8 ounces of provolone cheese, sliced

→ Vegetables

06 ½ cup of pepperoncini slices from a can, liquid drained
07 1 can (12 ounces) roasted red bell peppers, drained and cut thin

→ Topping

08 1 tablespoon of parmesan, finely grated
09 1 regular-sized egg
10 1 tablespoon of store-bought pesto

Instructions

Step 01

Set your oven to 350°F and spray a 9x13-inch dish to keep things from sticking.

Step 02

Take one dough sheet and press it into the dish, covering the bottom and partway up the sides. Arrange half the provolone cheese on top of it.

Step 03

Stack the pepperoni, ham, salami, roasted red pepper slices, pepperoncini, and then top with the rest of the provolone.

Step 04

Lay the second crescent dough sheet on top, pinching the edges all around to seal it. Whisk together the egg, pesto, and parmesan cheese in a bowl, then brush it all across the surface.

Step 05

Cover the dish loosely with greased foil and bake for 30 minutes. Take the foil off and let it bake another 15-20 minutes until it turns golden. Let it sit for 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

  1. Tastes best when served warm from the oven.
